(Excerpt from a recent interview with Dr. Schwarcz) John Meriwether, medical reporter
I was lucky to run in to Dr. Schwarcz recently at an implant dental meeting and had an opportunity to ask him a few questions. Dr. Schwarcz was kind enough to spend some time with me and gave me some great information to share.
Q: Dr. Schwarcz, what advice do you have for someone who is looking for a dentist with special skills such as implant surgery and is capable of treating more complicated type of problems? How can one avoid making a mistake when picking a new implant dentist?
A: Well John, first of all it is a pleasure to have the opportunity to help educate people about such an important topic as the one you have brought up. It is critical that prospective patients find themselves a highly trained and qualified implant dentist. Although any licensed dentist can place or restore implants most are not very experienced at doing those more complex cases. You should ask any dentist you are considering for treatment how long they have been doing implant surgeries, where and when they received their training and what is their success rate.
For example, I have been doing implant surgeries and replacing missing teeth with implanted permanent teeth for nearly 30 years now. I was originally trained at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, School of dentistry and I have had hundreds of hours of special implant training over the ensuing years. Having completed hundreds of implant cases my experience qualifies me to do even the most difficult and complex cases.
Q: Dr. Schwarcz, How can one know if a dentist like you has advanced training in implants?
A: Great question John. We have credentialing boards and organizations that evaluate a doctor’s background, knowledge and skills and make a determination as to that doctor’s qualification to place implants. These organizations can confer a designated status, referred to as a Fellowship, to a doctor who has these advanced skills and training.
I have been granted Fellowship status in the prestigious American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantology.
Q: Dr. Schwarcz, many patients think that implant treatments are too expensive for the average person to afford. Is that true?
A: John, I am often told that by many patients when I recommend implant treatment as the best option. Many years ago that was true and implants were only available to patients who were able to afford those high costs. As it turns out, over the last few years we have seen the cost of implants come way down. We are now able to purchase implants directly from the manufacturer which allows us to pass on those savings to our patients. We are now able to offer implant treatment to our patients at a cost that most average people can afford. At our Lifesmiles Implant Center we make implants affordable to all patients. With no interest, low payment, financing coupled with reasonable and affordable fees Implant treatment options are accessible to all patients.
Q: Dr. Schwarcz, as the founder and director of the Lifesmiles Implant Center, what advice would you have for someone who knows they need dental help but thinks the best solutions are either too expensive or too time consuming or too uncomfortable?
A: Well John. There is nothing more satisfying to me than to see the lives of my patients dramatically improved through the implant services we provide. I am thrilled when we are able to replace missing teeth with permanent teeth that look real and natural and allow our patients to once again enjoy the foods they once loved to eat. It is very satisfying to be able to take people out of the pain and misery they have had with dentures or partials and give them back the quality of life they deserve.
