Single Missing Tooth
You’re missing a single tooth. Until recently your only options were limited: a fixed bridge or a removable partial denture — which meant removing enamel from adjoining teeth. It was a very short list. Thanks to modern dentistry techniques, single tooth implants are now a good alternative. Although most patients use tooth implants to replace an ill-fitting denture, or to bridge a large gap of several missing teeth, it’s now possible for you to have a single tooth replacement.
You’re a good candidate for single tooth implants if you are in good health and the jawbone where the tooth implant will be fitted has not receded. You have to be of age, since your facial growth must be complete.
There are many advantages to this procedure. Single tooth implants are strong. Unlike dentures, they require less care. And the implants look and feel natural. So instead of being embarrassed by a missing tooth, you’ll have something to smile about.
Replacing Multiple Teeth
When more than one tooth is missing, there are three common treatment options: the traditional tooth supported bridge, a removable partial denture and an implant supported bridge. In this situation the benefits of implant supported teeth are even more obvious.
A removable prosthesis, such as a partial denture, actually accelerates the bone resorption process, resulting in more rapid bone deterioration. In addition, the clasps which hold the partial denture in place put extreme pressure on the natural teeth they hook onto, loosening them and in many cases, eventually leading to the loss of those teeth. Most patients with partial dentures state that they are uncomfortable and that they rarely wear them.
The advantages of replacing multiple missing teeth with implant supported bridges include the following:
- They look feel and function like natural teeth
- They are much more comfortable and stable than partial dentures
- Natural biting and chewing capacity is restored
- They virtually stop the bone resorption process (deterioration)
- The integrity of the facial structures is maintained
- Adjacent natural teeth are not compromised (ground down into peg shapes or loosened)
- Fully edentulous ( no teeth)
- Edentulous is a dental term, used to describe a state in which a patient has no teeth at all. This may sound strange but there are a great many people who do not have any teeth, either as a result of an accident or illness.
If you are in this position then dentures are often the only solution. This means having to use a messy ‘glue’ to fix their dentures in place which can be awkward and off-putting.
Dentures are a tried and tested answer to the problem of missing teeth but they are not without their problems which include the tendency to become loose, soreness and irritation.
These problems will resolve themselves over time as you become used to wearing dentures but there are some patients who never come to terms with denture wear. For that group of patients, dental implants are the answer.
Unlike standard implants, mini implants allow immediate loading. This means that the patient walks out of the office on the day of surgery with a lower denture which is not only solidly stable, but can be used to eat immediately. Mini implants can often (not always) be placed in the lower jaw without cutting an incision in the gums. Patients can be fitted with these implants and begin using the newly stabilized denture immediately because these implants do not require months of waiting time to integrate. These implants are usually cheaper than standard implants but that will depend upon your Doctor. More Info
